Hunt for dragon full helm [5k kills]
Aug 18th
Another 1k kills down. It’s been almost 3 weeks since the last update, due to a number of things. The main reason I hadn’t been killing them that often is because of the clue scroll update, Mith drags were much busier than usual and the overcrowding has a fairly noticeable effect on the possible kills per hour and would mess up my logs/waste too much time. During the 2 and a half weeks I’ve been working on a few skills so that I can do all my effigies without assistance, which is going fairly well, though I still have a couple more skills I need to raise.
I’ve been back to killing miths for a few days now, but dungeoneering will take priority over it when the occult floors are released. I’ll probably take a few weeks off to train that and go back to miths when it starts to get a bit boring. I’ll try to kill some more miths before the update, though it seems there’s a pretty good chance it will be tomorrow.
Here are the results at 5k kills

All in all this 1k kills doesn’t seem to be that great, there are fewer than average chewed bones and effigies, everything else seems about average. I did however beat my kills per hour record by 1 again getting 71 kills, so that was nice
Up until this point I’ve not been doing any clues, but with the release of elite clues I will probably start doing just the elites for the chance of a little extra profit. I didn’t manage to get any elites from this 1k (plenty of damned lvl 3s though), so hopefully I’ll have a bit better luck on the next 1k.
Next load of results may be a few weeks away, it all depends on how good the dungeoneering update is I guess

During the first 2k kills I had been considering the use of the other chaotic weapons (rapier/longsword) but stuck with the maul to save on tokens. After the 2k mark, I decided to just buy a new one anyway and went with the chaotic rapier. The rapier has increased my average kills per hour by a fair amount (up from ~55 kills an hour to ~62 an hour, although a few unsuccessfully tests were made during the early trips after 2k kills so it should actually be a bit higher (testing what combination of equipment/prayers work best with rapier)). So overall I’m quite pleased I decided to buy it, I’ll just have to earn the tokens back later
This 1k kills was the best yet for chewed bones, I beat my previous bones per trip record by 2 (and with only 60 kills in the trip) getting a whopping 6 bones in 1 trip (the trip before I had gotten 5 bones, so I beat my previous record 2 trips in a row and drastically increased the amount of chewed bones I had banked).
Here are some of the drops so far:
2 full rows of effigies, which I am going to be keeping till I have high enough stats to do them all myself (god help me when I need the bank space), I can finish some of them but I’ll be holding onto them all until I’m finished at miths. The 80 chewed bones waiting to be used, but I’ll be saving them for later. Then there’s the rune drops, there would be more but quite often I don’t have the inventory space to pick up everything that gets dropped (priority is usually given to the b-axes). The other main drop that is missing from this are the blood runes, which I’ve had well over 10k of them. I haven’t been too concerned about keeping track of them since I already had a few thousand before starting at miths, so they wouldn’t accurately reflect how many are drops from the dragons.
1k more dragons to match my last attempt, here comes 4k (and most likely more)!

More result from my hunt for a dragon full helm, I’ve reached the 2k kills mark now and I’m still enjoying killing the dragons, so we should see a lot more kills.

As you can see the average kills per hour is around the same (only slightly faster) and the drop rate for chewed bones has remained about the same. Effigies on the other hand seem to have been a little more common during the second thousand kills as I got 8 drops during this thousand, and 5 from the first thousand.
I also beat two records, my kill record went up by two kills from 61 to 63 and I also had a trip with 2 effigies. My chewed bone record was matched as well, but not beaten.
I am also going to be keeping track of my kills more accurately for any remaining kills. Up until around 1600-1700 kills I’ve solely been using my adventurers log to keep track my kills, but after certain events occurring during trips (xp milestones etc) my kill counts seemed unusually low on a couple of trips. So I have begun to log my prayer xp after each trip, from which I have been calculating my kills (divide the xp difference between trips by 72 – the xp per dragon bone) and have found a few trips where the A-log wasn’t matching the kills calculated from my prayer xp (probably no more than 60-70 kills missed overall). The adventurers log has been fairly unreliable lately anyway and experiencing a lot of technical problems, so it helps not having to wait for it to update before I can log my kills.
Hunt for dragon full helm #2 [and 1k kills]
Jul 14th
Back in late 2007 I made an attempt to get a dragon full helm from mithril dragons, I killed a fairly large number of them (over 4000) but with no luck. The best drop was a rune kite.
It has been just over 3 years since mithril dragons were added to the game and dragon full helms still remain one of the games most difficult drops to obtain (and may have been worth a bit more than they currently are if it weren’t for them being a possible drop when PvP was first released). No one can help you get one, unlike most other rare items (lootshare system), you just have to be insanely lucky, or plain insane (hi
). It is because of the difficulty of getting one that I really want to get one for myself, not for the money (although it’s a nice little bonus), but for the achievement of having got one of the games most notoriously difficult to obtain drops.
Back in 2007 when I gave the goal my first proper attempt the dragons were much harder to kill, at the time ranging them was the most efficient method of killing them and I was killing usually around 5-10 dragons a trip. Since then a lot of content has been released making the dragons multiple times easier to kill, content such as summoning (healing familiars help massively), the herblore update (super antifires allow use of powerful 2 handed melee weapons, extremes also speed up kills), curses (turmoil also makes them much easier) and more. All this content has made it possible to kill maybe 100+ dragons without banking, but atm I prefer a more comfortable 50-60 kills a trip leaving space to pick up and bank drops.
After killing a few mith drags recently, I have decided to give my goal of getting a helm another shot. So I will be killing plenty more dragons in the hopes of getting the full helm this time. I don’t know how many I am going to kill, I may kill less than last time, or I may kill more, it just depends how many I feel like killing.
I will post updates for every one thousand dragons I kill, so if you’re interested be sure to check back here every now and then. I also have a thread on the forums with more up to date stats and info about killing them.
At the time of posting this I’ve already killed just over 1000 mith drags, so here’s the first batch of results from that first thousand kills.
